What Is Cognitive Behavioural Coaching?

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC) is a structured and practical coaching approach that draws on the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) but is adapted for non-clinical, goal-focused settings. It helps individuals recognise how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours interact — and how small shifts in thinking can lead to meaningful change.

Coaching psychologist Rob Willson defines CBC as:

"A collaborative, goal-directed process that helps individuals identify and overcome unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours in order to enhance performance, wellbeing, and personal effectiveness."
(Willson & Branch, 2006)

Thoughts Drive Actions

At the core of CBC is the idea that our beliefs and thoughts shape how we feel and act. Sometimes, those thoughts become rigid, self-critical, or distorted in ways that hold us back — whether in confidence, communication, leadership, or decision-making.

CBC helps you:

  • Identify limiting beliefs and unhelpful thinking patterns

  • Challenge and reframe those thoughts

  • Develop new behaviours aligned with your goals and values

It’s not therapy, and it doesn’t involve clinical diagnosis. Instead, CBC offers a structured space to notice, question, and shift the internal dialogue that may be affecting your external results.

Tools and Techniques

CBC often uses tools such as:

  • Thought records

  • Behavioural experiments

  • Goal setting and problem-solving models

  • Self-reflection and journaling

These tools are applied flexibly within coaching sessions, always in service of real-world outcomes and personal development.

When Can CBC Help?

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching is especially useful if you:

  • Struggle with self-doubt or imposter thoughts

  • Want to manage stress or performance anxiety

  • Tend to overthink or avoid difficult decisions

  • Are navigating change and need mental clarity

Whether you're aiming to improve leadership confidence, handle difficult conversations, or simply feel more in control of your responses, CBC offers a toolkit for building mental flexibility and resilience.
